Chapter 11
MY MORNING DID NOT start off any better than my night before had. I had no hot water for my shower, something that was an absolute requirement for me. My idea of roughing it was when I ran out of chocolate, so I wasnât happy taking an icy, if abbreviated, shower. Iâd have to call someone to fix it. There was no way that I was going to willingly take another cold shower.
I was surprised to see Emmaâs car parked in her usual spot when I got to Donut Hearts. The lights were already on in the kitchen. âHello? Emma? Is that you?â
âWho else would it be?â she asked as she came out from the back.
âI donât know, a robber?â I asked.
âSeriously? What would they take?â she asked with a hint of laughter in her voice. âFlour? Sugar? I know our prices have been going up lately, but I donât think we have to worry about anyone trying to steal supplies from us.â
âWhat are you doing here?â I asked as I poured myself a cup of coffee. It was nice not having to wait for it, as was my usual custom, and the hot liquid took off some of the chill Iâd experienced with my shower.
âGrace called me last night,â she said.
âOkay,â I answered, waiting for the rest of the story.
âShe told me about volunteering you to make extra donuts for the wake, so she asked me to stay later and lend you a hand.â
âShe shouldnât have asked, and you donât have to do it,â I said quickly. âWait a second. If youâre offering to help me after work, why are you here now?â It was maybe just a bit early for mind games for me. I mostly made donuts on autopilot until I woke up fully, though the icy shower had managed to knock a few cobwebs out of my mind.
âI had a better idea. We can double up batches this morning if we work through our break time, and you can get out at your regular time,â she explained with a grin. âWhat do you say? It will be fun.â
I took a sip of coffee before I answered. âSo what youâre telling me is that you canât help me this afternoon, but you were willing to come in early to help me knock them out first thing.â
âI prefer to think of it as managing our available time and resources to better use,â she said.
âDid you get that from one of your business classes?â I asked her with a slight smile. Her enthusiasm was infectious.
âEcon 302,â she said. âSo, what do you say?â
âI believe thereâs only one thing left for me to say,â I told her. âThank you.â
âLetâs make donuts!â she said, as if she were on a game show and not standing in Donut Hearts in the middle of the night.
We finished up both double batches at twenty till six, which was when we usually opened the doors for our customers. âHow did that happen?â I asked her in wonder as she finished up another load of dishes.
